If someone looks lost then point him gently in the right direction.  For a start you may be wrong, and in any case wrenching off someone’s wrist isn’t going to do much good.  If he won’t take a hint that is his problem.

Counting aloud is frowned on (especially by those who have learned to count silently), but if you get confused by the music then counting each step can tell you where you should be in the dance.

Smile! Give me the impression that you are delighted by the opportunity of dancing with me.  You will get rid of me soon enough, and it will make me so much happier.  (And for goodness sake if you don’t like dancing then go away and do something you do like instead.)

Do it! If you think that it should be a right hand star then stick out your hand ready for it.  Don’t half put your hand out in the fond hope that if you are wrong I won’t notice.

 

If you are two steps behind the music don’t worry too much: you can be assumed to be plain ignorant, which will correct itself once you learn the dance.  If you are always two steps ahead of the music then you are both showing off that you think you know the dance, and proving that you can’t dance to the music.
